People with a bruxism condition grind, gnash or clench their teeth. It may be unconscious when you're awake or during sleep. Sleep bruxism is considered a movement disorder. People with this condition are likely to have other sleep disorders, such as snoring or sleep apnea.
Mild bruxism may not require treatment. But for some, bruxism can be frequent and severe enough to cause jaw disorders, headaches, damaged teeth and other problems.
People become aware of the complications when symptoms develop, and your dentist will see the signs. This is the time to consider the recommended bruxism guard.
A custom-made appliance worn at night is the most common treatment for bruxism.
